Jones Ferry Road Protected Bike Lane Pilot Project
The Town of Carrboro will be installing a protected bike lane in the Eastbound lanes of Jones Ferry Road. The impacted are is located between the NC 54 Eastbound Ramps and Barnes Street. Workers will be present in the roadway beginning at 9:00a on August 11th and is expected to be completed before 4:00p. Work zone traffic control devices will be in place to protect workers performing the installation. Please use caution when driving through the work zone. Work is expected to be completed by the end of the day. Rain days for the installation would be either Thursday, August 12th or Wednesday, August 18th.
In response to community interests, a pilot project for a protected bike lane on Jones Ferry Road has been developed. The goal of the pilot is to help determine the effectiveness of the proposed treatment as well as develop processes for maintenance and upkeep of a protected bike lane, in particular for snow removal. This project was developed and submitted through an encroachment agreement process with NCDOT, which was approved for installation in May 2021. The pilot project is expected to be in place for approximately one year (August 2021 through August 2022), and Town staff will be collecting supporting data (bike-ped counts and motor vehicle volume/speed) at regular intervals during the pilot.
